You can expect better GMail integration (cleaner IMAP functions), and the elimination of the duplicate message issue on sent items (finally), and added support for the email accounts, including a possible new lower priced tier of service. Ronen has dubbed it “BIS-Ultralight” in that you won’t get the “full” email functions, but the user will be able to “send, receive email and forward, copy, BCC, and get read receipts”, with no download or sending of attachments, meeting requests or HTML email formatting. Apparently, this is all part of RIM’s marketing more to the consumer market of the BIS service, as well as creating loyalty for the product.

Now, if we can hear what BIS 2.6 will do for the rest of us…

Features and limitations:

  • Users will get a address where they can send, receive email and forward, copy, BCC, and get read receipts. Auto Signature is available too
  • Customers will not be able to view or download or send attachments
  • Can accept and send meeting requests
  • They also will not get HTML email formatting
  • You only get the one address and cannot add other addresses
  • The new account status cannot tie in with accounts like Windows Live, Yahoo Mail, Gmail and others
  • BlackBerry Application Suite and BlackBerry Connect users cannot use this service
  • Email size is limited to 32KB
  • BlackBerry Messenger and PIN messaging works, but other instant messengers don’t
